Burma Extends Detention of Deputy Opposition Leader
Burma’s military government extended the house arrest of the deputy leader of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party by another year, shrugging off demands for his release.
The extension of Tin Oo’s detention—which the National League for Democracy (NLD) called “meaningless and unjust”—came just four days after the ruling junta announced it would hold a constitutional referendum in May and a general election in 2010. Read the rest of this entry »

Rare Sandpipers Found in Burma
MICHAEL CASEY / AP WRITER / BANGKOK : The discovery of 84 spoon-billed sandpipers in a coastal stretch of Burma this year offers hope for saving the endangered birds, a conservation group said Thursday.
The discovery comes only months after Russian researchers reported that numbers of the tiny birds—with speckled brow feathers and a distinctive spoon-shaped bill—had dropped 70 percent in the past few years in their breeding sites in Siberia and none had been seen this year in their traditional wintering sites in Bangladesh, Britain-based conservation group BirdLife International said. 13 Countries Recruit and Use Child Soldiers
EDITH M. LEDERER / AP WRITER / UNITED NATION : The situation for children caught in conflict remains “grave and entirely unacceptable” because 58 groups in 13 countries still recruit and use child soldiers, a senior UN official said.

A mother of three raped and killed by Burmese soldier
Kachin News Group : A Kachin mother of three children was raped and killed over a month ago in Hukawng Valley in Kachin State of Northern Burma by Burma Army soldiers, said local sources.
Ms. Hpaumyang Kai (32), a widow and a mother of three children was raped and killed on December 30, 2007 in her village called Nawngmi on Ledo Road, said residents of Nawngmi. Read the rest of this entry »

Children’s Day nothing to celebrate in Burma
Irrawaddy - Min Lwin : Today is Children’s Day in Burma, commemorating the birthday of Gen Aung San, the founder of the Burmese armed forces and hero of Burmese independence.
